English is the predominant language of the majority of the population and one of New Zealand`s official languages. It is spoken by 96,1 percent of the population. It is similar to Australian English. The obvious differences are in the pronunciation of the language, but considering that many people from the northern hemisphere can’t differentiate the accents of Australians and Kiwis, the differences can’t be too great? Of course, many would disagree! Ask a Kiwi to say "six" and "fish and chips". In the 1860s, the M?ori became a nonage language in the shadow of the English which are spoken by missioners, colonists, gold searchers and dealers from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds. Lately, in the 19th century the colonial administrations of the country and its provinces presented an English mode school system for all New Zealanders. In 20th century M?ori became second official language of New Zealand. New Zealand English has also borrowed words and phrases from M?ori, such as haka (war dance), kia ora (a greeting), mana (power or prestige), puku (stomach), taonga (treasure) and waka (canoe). New Zealanders often reply to a question or emphasise a point by adding a rising intonation at the end of the sentence.
